They had captured their mortal enemy, “The Rifle That Sings,” and he had done them great honor by — spitting at the young boys as they whipped him with bowstrings, turning his head contemptuously as they plugged him to the ground and as they burned his legs with glowing embers — even then at the martyr’s stake he did not as much blink when the warriors threw their axes.
But Owen Metzgar knew that this was just the beginning. The ceremony would last for days – with escalating torture until he would collapse like a trembling, broken wreck of a human being…
